Why Pushing Harder Isn’t Always The Answer

This week, let’s look at a story about effort, exhaustion, and why rest is never wasted time.

Let’s dive in...

⏳ THE TIMELESS STORY

There once was a woodcutter who was working in a forest.

He had been cutting wood for weeks without a break.

Every day, the same routine.

Into the forest at dawn, out at dusk.

He was pushing himself harder than the day before.

But something just wasn’t adding up.

The harder he worked... the less wood he was cutting.

And he couldn’t figure out why.

He blamed the trees.

He blamed the weather.

He even blamed himself for not being focused enough.

So he worked longer hours. He even skipped his breaks.

And he told himself he just needed to push through.

One afternoon an old man sat down nearby and watched him struggle for a while.

After some time, he walked over.

“Can I see your saw?” he asked.

The woodcutter handed it over.

The old man looked at it carefully and ran his thumb along the teeth.

“It’s blunt,” he said.

“I know,” the woodcutter said.

“But I don’t have time to sharpen it. I have too much work to do.”

The old man said nothing.

He just pointed at the pile of wood behind the woodcutter.

It was smaller than it should have been after a full day’s work.

The woodcutter stared at the pile.

All that effort… All those hours.

He had been pushing so hard for so long...

That he never once stopped to ask why it wasn’t working.

✨ UNDERSTANDING WHY REST IS PRODUCTIVE

We’ve been told that working hard is always the answer.

And there’s no denying that...

But working hard and running yourself into the ground are two very different things.

When we’re exhausted... our thinking gets foggy.

When we’re exhausted, our patience runs thin.

The work that used to come naturally starts to feel like a struggle.

And no matter how many extra hours you put in... the results just don’t match the effort.

And if we look closely... we’re not running out of effort.

We’re running out of energy to make that effort count.

An exhausted mind is exactly like a blunt saw. It’s getting the work done with a fraction of the power it actually has.

Our mind and body need time to recover.

It’s a requirement for showing up at your best.

And resting doesn’t mean you’re falling behind.

It’s the thing that makes everything else possible.

So if you’ve been pushing hard lately and things still aren’t moving the way you want them to...

Maybe the answer isn’t more effort.

Maybe it’s time to sharpen the saw.

🧘‍♂️ MANTRA FOR THE WEEK

❝

“This week I give myself permission to rest when I need to... because rest is what allows me to keep going. I know that I am not falling behind when I take a break. I am sharpening myself for everything that lies ahead.”
