This week, let's look at a story from the Sufi tradition.
A story about a shortcut that wasn't... and what it taught one traveler about the roads we choose.
Let's dive in...
⏳ THE TIMELESS STORY
There once was a young traveler who was making his way to a distant city.
He was eager to get there.
He had heard great things about it and he didn't want to waste a single day on the road.
At the edge of his village, he stopped to ask an old wise man for directions.
The wise man pointed to a long winding road that curved through the valleys and hills.
"Take that road," he said.
"It will get you there."
The traveler looked at it and asked…
"What about that path?", pointing straight ahead through the desert.
"That one looks much shorter."
"It is shorter," the wise man said.
The traveler smiled and thanked him... then took the straight path through the desert.
The first day he made good progress...
All the while thinking how foolish the wise man was.
But by the second day the sun was relentless and there was no shade anywhere.
His water was running low and the landscape all looked the same in every direction.
And by the third day he wasn't even sure whether he was still heading the right way.
So he turned back in disappointment.
It took him two more days just to find his way home again.
When he arrived back at the village, tired and empty handed, he saw the wise man sitting in the same spot.
He sat down besides the wise man and looked at the long winding road.
He could see what the wise man was trying to show him.
The longer road curved through the valleys where there would be water.
It moved through the hills where there would be shade.
And it wound around the difficult terrain instead of through it.
The longer road… wasn't the slower one after all.
"The longest way round is the shortest way home."
✨ UNDERSTANDING THE LONGER PATH
Aren't we all drawn to the shortest path?
The fastest option. The most direct route.
The one that looks like it will get us there with the least amount of time and effort.
And that makes complete sense.
But the path that looks shortest isn't always the one with the least resistance.
Sometimes the longer road has clarity when you're confused.
It has the right people to support you when you need it most.
The right conditions to actually help you grow along the way.
And the shortcut that looks efficient on paper... sometimes has nothing you need to sustain the journey.
And we can see this in our own lives too...
We're so focused on getting things done quickly that we don't stop to ask...
Does this path actually have what I need to get there?
Is it fulfilling? Will I enjoy the journey?
Sometimes the longer path... the one that winds, the one that seems to take more time... is actually the one with less friction.
It’s the one with less resistance.
And the one with more of what you need along the way.
And it gets you there.
Sometimes faster than you expected... and sometimes not as fast as you'd hoped.
But in better shape than the shortcut ever would have.
"Trust the process. The longer road often leads to the better destination."
🧘♂️ MANTRA FOR THE WEEK
"I trust the path I am on... even when it looks longer than I'd like. I know that what looks like the fastest route... may not always be the best one for me. And I move forward with the confidence that everything I need for this journey... is already on the path ahead of me. All I need to do is keep moving ahead."
