This week, let's look at a story from the Persian tradition.

A story about loss, trust, and what we can't see until we're on the other side of it.

Let's dive in....

There once was a king who had a trusted advisor who had served him for many years.

The advisor had a saying he lived by... and repeated often.

"All things work for the good."

No matter what happened... good or bad... that was his response.

The king found it charming at first.

Then after a while it felt irritating. And then... he found it unbearable.

They were out hunting one day when the king's sword slipped.

In an instant... the king lost his thumb.

He stood there looking at his hand... still not quite believing it.

And his advisor said... "All things work for the good."

The king looked at him... and snapped.

He had the advisor taken away and thrown in prison that same evening.

Months passed...

One afternoon, the king rode out alone into unfamiliar territory.

Much further than he should have gone alone.

And by the time he realized where he was... he was surrounded.

By a tribe known for one particular ritual... they offered their captives as a sacrifice.

Only the most perfect among them.

They brought the king before their elders.

The elders examined him carefully.

Then they saw his thumb missing.

The elder looked at him. "An imperfect man cannot be offered as a sacrifice."

So they released him.

And the king rode back to his palace…

When he arrived, the first thing he did was go to the prison and free his advisor.

"You were right," he said. "The thumb... it saved my life."

The advisor smiled. "I know," he said.

"But I have to ask," the king said...

"If all things work for the good... what good came from me throwing you in prison?"

The advisor looked at him and said...

"If you hadn't thrown me in prison... I would have been with you that day. And unlike you... I have all my fingers."

Most of us have had a moment that felt like the worst thing at the time.

Most of us have also heard it enough... that time heals.

That things get better. That we just have to keep going.

And that's true.

But the king's story is pointing at something deeper than that.

That thumb... that specific loss, at that specific moment... is what kept him alive.

Take it away and the story ends differently.

And the advisor's time in that cell... as unfair as it was...

Is what kept him from being in that forest the day the king was captured.

What looked like a setback... turned out to be protection.

We don't always get to find out why something happened the way they did.

But what this story is saying is worth sitting with...

That sometimes the thing we're most desperate to undo... is doing something we can't see yet.

The closed door… The failed plan... The loss that still stings…

Maybe it isn't a sign that things are going wrong…

Maybe it's just that we can't see the whole picture yet.
