This week, let's look at a story from the Sufi tradition.
A story about waiting for the right moment... and what it costs us while we do.
Let's dive in...
⏳ THE TIMELESS STORY
There once was a man who had a piece of land near his home.
He had always wanted to turn it into a garden.
He could picture it clearly... The rows of vegetables.
The flowers along the wall.
The shade of a tree he would plant right in the center.
But every year that passed, something came in the way.
When he first moved in, nearly twenty years ago... there was too much else to settle.
A few years later... the rains came at the wrong time.
Then there was a difficult period with his family.
Then work got busy...
Then he told himself he'd start fresh in the new year.
And just like that... years had gone by.
All the while... his land was still empty...
And he was waiting for a moment that never seemed to arrive.
One afternoon, an old woman was passing by his home.
She stopped and looked at the land.
"Is this yours?" she asked.
"Yes," he said.
"Are you planning to do something with it?"
"A garden," he said. "I've been meaning to start."
"And what's stopping you?"
"The time was never quite right," he said.
The old woman was quiet for a moment...
"The best time to plant this garden," she said... "was twenty years ago, when you first moved in..."
"And the second best time... is now."
And then she continued on her way.
"Stop waiting for the perfect moment. Take the moment and make it perfect."
✨ UNDERSTANDING THE COST OF WAITING
Most of us have a garden.
Not a real one necessarily... but something we've been meaning to start.
Something we can picture clearly in our minds but haven't quite begun in our lives.
Maybe a business... or maybe a creative project.
Maybe a conversation we keep putting off…
Or a version of ourselves we keep saying we'll become... when the time is right.
And the time is never quite right.
There's always something in the way.
Something to sort out first. Some season that feels more suitable than this one.
And so we wait.
And here's what waiting does...
It doesn't just delay the thing we're waiting to begin.
It becomes a habit.
A pattern of putting ourselves just slightly out of reach of the things we actually want.
And then the years pass… The way they always do.
The cost of waiting isn't one big loss. It's a thousand small ones.
The old woman in the story didn't say anything cruel.
She just said what was true.
The best time has passed...
But the second best time... is always now!
Not next month. Not when things settle.
Not when you feel more ready.
Now!
Because the truth is... you will never feel completely ready.
And honestly... you'll never feel completely ready before you start.
That feeling shows up after you take the first step.
And the longer you wait for it to arrive first... the more seasons go by that you can never get back.
"Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can."
🧘♂️ MANTRA FOR THE WEEK
“From now... I stop telling myself the time isn't right. I have everything I need to take the first step. And I take it today. Not when things are better. Not when I feel more ready. Today!”
