This week, let’s look at a story from the Zen tradition.
A story about happiness, and how it often shows up in the smallest of moments.
Let’s dive in...
⏳ THE TIMELESS STORY
A hungry monk had been walking for two days, and he hadn’t eaten anything since the morning before.
By now his stomach was growling so loudly that he was sure the birds could hear it.
All he could think about was food...
When he finally reached a village, a woman at the first house saw how tired he looked and handed him a bowl of rice.
“It’s all I can spare,” she said.
“It’s more than enough,” said the monk...
He found a spot under a tree and sat down.
The rice was still warm, and he could smell it before he even lifted his hand.
He was just about to take the first bite when he noticed a man sitting a little way off.
The man’s clothes were torn, and he was just looking at the bowl.
It’s my only meal, the monk thought. I’ve earned it. He can ask someone else.
He took a bite and tried to enjoy it.
But it didn’t taste the way he had been thinking it would.
He kept feeling the man’s eyes on him.
After a while, he sighed, got up and walked over.
“Here,” he said. “Take half.”
The man looked surprised, and then took it with both hands.
They sat next to each other and ate, and the monk started noticing something strange...
Somehow the rice tasted better now.
Every bite was sweeter than the one before.
And when they finished eating, even though the monk’s stomach was only half full...
He felt a happiness he hadn’t felt in days.
“Happiness is only real when shared.”
✨ UNDERSTANDING WHERE HAPPINESS GROWS
We often believe that happiness comes from having more.
More money... More comfort... More things that we can claim as ours.
But if we look closely at the moments that made us truly happy, usually a different picture shows up.
Think about the times you’ve felt really happy recently.
It might have been a meal shared with the people you love...
Or a laugh with a friend over something silly.
And if you think about it, those moments wouldn’t have felt the same if we were alone.
A joke is funnier when someone else laughs.
Good news feels bigger when you get to tell it to someone.
And even a simple meal tastes better when you share it.
So maybe happiness has less to do with how much we have, and more to do with what we share, and the satisfaction that comes with sharing it.
So this week, pay attention to what you feel right after you share something with someone.
“Happiness is the only thing that multiplies when you share it.”
🧘♂️ MANTRA FOR THE WEEK
“This week, I find happiness in the small moments I share with others. I notice how good it feels to give, even in the smallest ways, and I let that satisfaction remind me that I am already blessed with enough.”
