How Panic Stops Us From Seeing Clearly

This week, let's look at a story from the Sufi tradition.

A story about stress, panic, and why things are rarely as bad as they feel in the moment.

Let's dive in...

⏳ THE TIMELESS STORY

There once was a man who lived in a small house in a village.

He was known for being a hard worker...

Someone who was always busy, always had a lot on his plate.

One evening, just as the sun was beginning to set, he stepped outside for a moment and glanced back at his house.

And his heart just skipped a beat for a moment.

The entire side of his house was glowing a deep, burning orange.

He was convinced it was on fire.

He ran inside screaming for his family to get out.

He grabbed whatever he could carry and he ran out to the street shouting for help.

His neighbors came rushing out to see what was happening.

But when they looked at his house... they saw nothing.

No smoke. No flames. No fire.

Just the warm, golden light of the setting sun reflecting off his window...

And it was casting an orange glow across the wall.

One of his neighbors walked over and put a hand on his shoulder.

"Brother," he said gently...

"Your house is not on fire... It's just the sunset."

The man stood there... still breathing heavily, his heart still racing.

And slowly... he began to see what everyone else had been seeing all along.

Just the sunlight. Just the reflection.

He sat down on the steps outside his house... thinking about how certain he had been.

How convinced he was that his house was on fire.

When in reality... nothing had been wrong at all.

✨ UNDERSTANDING HOW PANIC CLOUDS OUR JUDGEMENT

We often find ourselves in moments where everything feels like it is falling apart at once.

And in those moments... our mind does something very interesting.

It stops seeing what's actually there... and starts showing us our fears.

It shows us what we're afraid of.

Just like the man in the story... who panicked and saw that his house was on fire.

That's what panic does to us.

It takes something that is real... and wraps it in fear.

And suddenly a difficult situation becomes a disaster.

A tight deadline becomes an impossible one.

A problem that has a solution starts to feel like one that doesn't.

And when we're in panic mode... we can't see it happening.

Just like the man couldn't see that it was just the sunset.

The neighbor could see clearly because he wasn't inside the panic.

He was watching it all from the outside.

And that's the thing about stress and panic...

They narrow our vision.

They make us react before we've had a chance to really look.

And when we finally slow down and look properly...

The situation is never as bad as it felt in the moment.

🧘‍♂️ MANTRA FOR THE WEEK

❝

"When I feel overwhelmed and everything feels like it's falling apart... I remind myself that my mind might be showing me my fears and not the reality. So I take a deep breath and I look again calmly. Because I know that the situation is never as bad as it feels in the moment."
